
A Modesto jury has reached a verdict in a high-profile case involving the shooting of a Modesto Police investigator. Jesse James Brooks has been found guilty on multiple counts, including three charges of premeditated attempted homicide of a peace officer, according to a recent Facebook post from the Modesto Police Department. The jury's decision marks the conclusion of a case that began with the August 14, 2021, shooting, which left Investigator Michael Rokaitis critically injured and ultimately led to the loss of his leg.
The post by Modesto Police reveals that other officers, Investigators Davies and Billing, were also under fire during the tragic incident. Brooks was not only convicted of the aforementioned attempted homicide but also of three counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition. The convictions could potentially result in Brooks receiving three life sentences. A Facebook post by the Modesto Police Department detailed the jury's findings and the severity of the charges handed down.
Modesto Police Chief Brandon Gillespie was quoted in the social media post, expressing his thoughts on the court's decision. "This conviction is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office," he stated. Gillespie also acknowledged Investigator Rokaitis' determination, noting, "Investigator Rokaitis has shown incredible resilience in the face of adversity, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our officers and our community."
