Joann, a fabrics and crafts retailer, is closing over 500 stores as part of a plan to downsize after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy again. The company is shutting down approximately 533 of its 800 locations nationwide due to financial challenges. In Texas, 18 stores will close, including several in Houston, affecting the company’s fourth-largest market, as reported by Statesman.
Joann is closing multiple stores as part of a broader plan, stating that "Right-sizing the store footprint is a critical part of the efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN." After filing for bankruptcy, the company was removed from the U.S. stock exchange and became private. Its 2024 restructuring was temporary, and on January 15, Joann announced plans to sell "substantially all of its assets" to reduce debt. A company spokesperson said, "This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve," according to KHOU.
Several Joann locations in Texas, including stores in Abilene, Arlington, Austin, Dallas, Denton, and the Houston area, are set to close as part of a larger restructuring affecting nearly every state except Hawaii. A Joann spokesperson stated, "A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time." The closures will impact employees, customers, and local communities as the company adjusts its operations, as stated by Statesman.
