Two members of the Johnson City Police Department were recently honored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. Officer Jonathon Workman and former Officer Jacob Rice were named Public Servants of the Year by Johnson City VFW Post 2108, as mentioned in a Johnson City government announcement. The commendation, announced last Friday, recognized their lifesaving actions during an incident on September 3, 2024.
Their swift response to a distressing call showcased an unwavering commitment to public safety. According to Senior Vice Commander Andy Bean of the Johnson City VFW Post 2108, "The officers chosen for this recognition were selected based on their exemplary service, leadership, and the positive impact they have made in our community," as reported by the Johnson City. The VFW's partnership with the JCPD and their joint effort to ensure the city's safety was highlighted during the officers' commendation ceremony.
Officer Workman and former Officer Rice played a crucial role in preventing a potential tragedy when they responded to a suicide threat by quickly gaining access to the individual's apartment and promptly initiating life-saving measures while calling for medical support. Officer Workman reflected on the experience, saying, "It’s an honor to be recognized for something that, to us, is part of our job," according to statements he gave to Johnson City officials.
For their valorous conduct, the JCPD previously awarded the two officers with the JCPD Life Saving Award in October 2024. JCPD Chief Billy Church expressed his pride in the officers' actions, stating, "The actions for which these officers were recognized, reflect the highest standards of public service," as noted by the Johnson City. The ceremony hosted by the VFW was not just a mere recognition but an affirmation of the profound impact of their quick thinking and teamwork, which managed to save a fellow citizen's life.
