Kissimmee residents can expect major changes at a bustling city juncture. In a significant overhaul to improve traffic woes and safety concerns, the city has earmarked $3.34 million to revamp the intersection at West Oak Street and John Young Parkway. The bulk of the financing comes from the federal budget, with over 95% of the funds being provided through Federal-Aid resources by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and MetroPlan Orlando, as detailed on the City of Kissimmee’s website.
With shovels set to hit the ground come March 3, locals should brace for a litany of construction activities expected to wrap up by spring 2026. The early stages will address utility relocation before shifting toward expansive roadway enhancements. While the teams will operate from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, commuters may need to navigate through temporary lane closures and alternative routes, albeit with clear signage to mitigate confusion.
The anticipated improvements are extensive. A right-turn-only lane will be converted into a through lane to dilute congestion. Milling, resurfacing, new pavement, and overhauled drainage systems will create a more resilient infrastructure. Enhancements for pedestrian safety aren't being overlooked. The plan includes sidewalk updates, curb ramps, and ADA-compliant detectable warning surfaces. Furthermore, traffic signals, lighting, and signage will be upgraded for improved visibility.
