Knox County School officials are forging ahead with a proposal that could transform the educational landscape for several communities. The proposal encompasses closing two elementary schools, converting another into a preschool, and constructing a new K-8 institution.

According to WATE, Superintendent Jon Rysewyk revealed plans to recommend this multi-faceted educational shift at the next school board meeting. In the works is a land swap deal that would see Knox County Schools acquire the former Rule High School property, in exchange for the sites of the current Beaumont Magnet Academy, Maynard Elementary School, and to transform West View Elementary into just a preschool.

This new K-8 school is expected to house approximately 1,000 elementary students and 600 middle schoolers, aiming to address middle school capacity issues and may mitigate multiple school transitions for students in the Mechanicsville, Lonsdale, and Beaumont regions, as reported by WBIR.

With a reported budget of $66 million allocated for this project, the initiative arises from the district's need to accommodate "rapid growth and transformation" across Knox County. As stated by Knox News article, "Administrators are proposing the change because of worries about overcrowding in the coming years." A vote on this extensive proposal is set for the school board meeting on February 6.
