The National Weather Service in Knoxville has updated its forecast for the coming days, and it seems the city should brace for a mix of weather conditions, including the possibility of severe thunderstorms and significant flooding. According to the latest release, the next week will see shifting weather patterns, which may disrupt daily life for residents in the region.
Beginning today, Knoxville will experience mostly sunny skies, with a high near 48 degrees Fahrenheit and a calm northeast wind blowing between 5 to 10 mph. However, conditions are expected to take a turn as the weekend approaches, bringing showers by Saturday. The forecast released by the National Weather Service indicates a 60% chance of precipitation, with the possibility of gusting winds as high as 25 mph.
The situation appears more complex for Saturday night, where showers and even thunderstorms are predicted after 1 am. Some of these storms could produce heavy rainfall leading to a 100% chance of precipitation, and the situation being further exacerbated by strong south winds of 10 to 15 mph, gusting up to 40 mph. The hazardous conditions could lead to stream and river flooding, flooded roads, and the increased likelihood of mud and rock slides. The National Weather Service cautions, "Southern portions of East Tennessee, including the Chattanooga area, are highlighted in a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms Saturday night." Damaging winds are noted as the primary concern to arise from these weather events.
Residents in the mountainous regions are advised to prepare for strong winds, which could last from late tonight through Sunday morning, as reported by the Hazardous Weather Outlook update. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible in these areas, which may cause downed trees and power outages, particularly given the already saturated grounds. Detailed reports of flooding or severe thunderstorms this weekend will be appreciated, says the advisory.
Following the tumultuous weather over the weekend, the forecast for Washington's Birthday on Monday is thankfully milder, with sunny skies and a high near 43 degrees expected. Although the brief respite offers some relief, the region should remain vigilant as Tuesday night could usher in a 20 percent chance of snow showers after 1 am, leading into a week where rain and snow showers are likely to continue.
