Residents in Knoxville should brace for cold and snowy conditions as a mixture of snow showers and flurries are forecasted for the morning hours. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Knoxville, temperatures are expected to peak at a chilly high of 27 degrees, with a 30% chance of precipitation and still Northwest winds blowing at 5 to 10 mph.
As night descends, the NWS anticipates temperatures will drop to around 15 degrees, accompanied by partly cloudy skies and a northeast wind near 5 mph. The colder night air, favorable for snow accumulation, is expected to cause temperatures to drop into the teens and single digits by Friday morning, with wind chill factors near or below 0 degrees.
Looking ahead, the weather is set to warm up as the weekend approaches. The forecast for Friday calls for sunny conditions with a high near 37, providing a break from the cold. Temperatures are expected to rise further, reaching the 40s on Saturday and approaching 50 degrees by Sunday. The forecast indicates mostly clear skies over the weekend, offering relief after the recent cold snap.
The National Weather Service Morristown TN has also issued a Cold Weather Advisory for East Tennessee effective from 10 p.m. this evening to 10 a.m. EST Friday. "Very cold wind chills as low as zero expected," warns the advisory, cautioning that “wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.” Residents are advised to dress warmly and wear protective gear, such as hats and gloves, when going out into the cold night.
While the hazardous weather is not forecasted to continue beyond today, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant. The NWS has stated that "reports of additional snow accumulations will be appreciated," highlighting the role of community reporting during these weather events. As snow showers end this morning, commuters should be aware of the potential for icy roads, particularly black ice, which could create hazardous travel conditions in areas that received snow.
