The city of Knoxville woke up to a foggy morning with visibility reduced to just 3 miles, according to the National Weather Service, while the humidity hit a wall at 100%. Draped in a shroud of mist, the city began its day with the chance of showers mainly before 9 am, and a wind advisory that persists until noon.
Sharp winds are slicing through the area, hailing from the southwest at 15 to 30 mph, but with gusts that could vault up to 50 mph. The National Weather Service advises that these winds could send unsecured objects flying, as well as bring down tree limbs and potentially lead to power outages. Drivers are warned to exercise extra caution, especially if piloting high profile vehicles. Still looking ahead, the temperature was set to tumble to around 36 by the late afternoon, pushed by a bracing west wind.
As nightfall grips the region, the mostly cloudy cloak is predicted to loosen slightly. The overnight low will hover around 25 degrees with winds calming down a bit to speeds of 5 to 15 mph. Then, turning the corner into Washington's Birthday, we're looking at a partly sunny sky and highs nudging into the low 40s, offering a brief interlude of calm before the next bout of wintry weather rolls in.
With an eye on the upcoming week, the forecast sees a tumult of snow showers likely after 1 am Tuesday. The low for the night is expected to plant itself around 29 degrees. When the day breaks on Wednesday, residents should prepare for a mix of snow and rain showers before 10 am. The chance of precipitation leaps to 80%, promising another day of wintry ballet across the city skies, with the low that night dipping to a frosty 19 degrees.
Later in the week, clearer skies will prevail with mostly sunny conditions and highs cresting at near 31 on Thursday, showing a glimmer of respite from the harsh winter lashes. As Knoxville marches toward the weekend, the mercury will rise modestly, drifting toward a high near 43 by Saturday. With the city's residents weathering the ebb and flow of winter's last stand, another wild week of weather lays its card down on the table, presenting a mixed hand of gusty winds, chilly showers, and patchy snow.
