A Knoxville man has been handed a heavy sentence after a deadly dispute between roommates turned lethal, an argument rooted in the banalities of pet ownership. The Knox County District Attorney's Office announced that Stefen White, 35, was convicted of Second Degree Murder and sentenced to serve a total of twenty-one years without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting his roommate during a disagreement regarding the upkeep of his dogs.
The jury heard the case over a two-day trial in December, where Assistant District Attorneys Debbie Malone and Sean Roberts presented their evidence. According to official reports, Knoxville Police Department officers initially responded to a shooting at a residence on East Oldham Avenue on December 23, 2023. KPD Det. Tim Riddle discovered that White and the victim were arguing over White's refusal to clean up after his dogs when White shot the victim in the chest three times.
District Attorney Charme Allen spoke on the matter, "This is another tragic example of an argument escalating to violence," highlighting the grave nature of the resolution to what began as a friction over a domestic issue. White argued that before the shooting, the victim had struck him, a claim that found no backing in witness testimonies nor any corroborating physical evidence.
Additional team members, including Assistant Victim Witness Coordinator Kaitlyn Smith and Legal Secretary Connie Watts, bolstered the prosecution's efforts. Judge Hector Sanchez handed down White's sentence after the jury's conviction, ensuring a lengthy stay behind bars for White.
