Knoxville's Cal Johnson Community Center Advances Inclusivity with New Accessibility FeaturesSource: Google Street View

City officials will mark a step forward in inclusivity with the unveiling of new accessibility improvements at the Cal Johnson Community Center, located at 507 Hall of Fame Drive, next Tuesday at 2 p.m. The center, a notable location in Knoxville, features basketball courts designed as part of a joint revitalization project led by Candace Parker and the 2K Foundations, according to an announcement by the City of Knoxville.

Previously, accessibility was limited due to the steep grassy incline leading to the courts. With this week's anticipated ribbon cutting, a new wide, flat sidewalk has been installed, connecting the community center, picnic areas, playground, and basketball courts. The project also includes stairs linking the courts to the parking lot, with Design and Construction Services Inc. overseeing the construction.

The courts feature vibrant murals and are adorned with inspirational quotes from local figures such as Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt and poet Nikki Giovanni. These elements were part of a comprehensive 2020 renovation led by Parker and the 2K Foundations, as stated in the city's announcement.

In compliance with its responsibilities under Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II, the City of Knoxville continues to work towards providing access to all city programs, services, and activities. This includes offering translation, interpretation, modifications, accommodations, alternative formats, auxiliary aids, and other services as needed, in line with the city’s commitment to ensuring accessibility for all.
