
High school sophomores in the Apprentice, Internship, Mentorship Program recently explored public safety careers in Lawton. They visited the City’s Public Safety Center, where local police and fire departments provided an inside look at their roles. Apprentice, Internship, Mentorship for Lawton helps youth develop leadership and career skills, according to the City of Lawton.
Lieutenant Charles Whittington, Public Information Officer, led the LPD area's presentation, emphasizing the importance of students understanding police operations. He stated, "It's crucial for these students to understand how our department operates. We work as a unified team, committed to maintaining the safety of our community, and it’s important for them to recognize that dynamic." The hands-on tour helped simplify the department's complex operations, as reported by the City of Lawton.
Lawton Fire Department Assistant Chief Kyle Nyhart shared insights into firefighting, emphasizing its challenges and rewards. “I believe it’s essential for these students to see the ins and outs of our profession,” he said. Through the Apprentice, Internship, Mentorship program, students received mentorship and hands-on experience from professionals, helping them connect theory with practice. City of Lawton employees played a key role in guiding these future leaders. Nyhart added, “Firefighting is an incredible career, and I wanted to give them a glimpse into our daily responsibilities. Hopefully, it sparked an interest in the Fire Service.”
