A case of mail theft that unfolded across two days in the City of Livonia has concluded with the arrest of a suspect, now identified as Al-Qaadir Walik-Rasool, a 23-year-old resident of New Haven, Michigan. According to ClickOnDetroit, the thefts occurred in the early morning hours of January 21 and 22, affecting several residents.
Witness descriptions implicated a black Chevrolet Malibu in the alleged thefts, a detail that led a Livonia officer to identify the suspect's vehicle while canvassing the area for surveillance footage, the thefts were followed by a short-lived pursuit the very next day when a Livonia sergeant attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled the scene, subsequently losing control of the car, abandoning it, and then fleeing on foot; finally seeking refuge inside a nearby dumpster where he was discovered and arrested, captured in video footage detailed by the authorities.
Further investigation by the police reportedly linked Walik-Rasool to the crimes after recovering "several pieces of evidence" in the suspect vehicle, as shared in a social media post by the Livonia Police Department. These discoveries led to Walik-Rasool's arraignment where he faced multiple charges including fleeing and eluding police, obstructing and resisting arrest, and five counts of mail theft.
The court has set a cash/surety bond at $10,000 for Walik-Rasool, and he is scheduled for a court hearing on February 27, as the investigation into these incidents continues, residents of Livonia are being urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities that may suggest a continuation of similar criminal behavior in their neighborhoods.
