Early Wednesday morning, a chase involving California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers turned fatal after a white van came to an abrupt halt at the end of a cul-de-sac in Los Angeles' Winnetka neighborhood, KTLA reported. The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. on Sunnybrae Avenue, where, according to a video clip captured by a neighbor, a flurry of gunshots sounded, and patrol units’ lights flashed in the night.
While details surrounding the reason for the pursuit and subsequent shooting remained unclear, what is known is that the driver of the van, a 21-year-old man, was shot dead by officers at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), now leading the investigation, said the family of the deceased described him as their grandson, who had taken the family’s van to attend a party. Meanwhile, the CHP has yet to clarify what warranted the chase or the gunfire that ultimately claimed the young man's life, as ABC7 noted, the deceased's grandmother expressed her confusion and disbelief, recalling, "He was driving his father's work truck. He borrowed it to go visit his cousin."
The pursuit was initially believed to be of a possible reckless driver, according to CBS Los Angeles, which ended in the residential area of the Winnetka neighborhood. The shock of the event was captured by a neighbor's security camera audio which recorded the moment the confrontation escalated to gunfire. The LAPD has confirmed that "no one else was injured during the incident."
