Dallas riders are poised to glimpse the future, complete with self-driving cars on their streets. Lyft, the well-known ride-hailing service, has announced plans to introduce autonomous robotaxis to the Dallas area as early as 2026. This initiative is a partnership with the Japanese company Marubeni and employs Mobileye Drive technology in the fleet vehicles offered through the Lyft platform. In a social media post, Lyft CEO David Risher expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, "The more AVs out there, the more the rideshare market expands. It’s all part of our promise to serve and connect, and we’re excited to have Marubeni along for the ride," as reported by FOX 4 News.
The decision to roll out the automated taxi service in Dallas was not arbitrary. As CJ Macklin, senior manager of communications at Lyft, told Dallas News, “We selected Dallas in part because of its long history in embracing forward-looking technology and its deep roots in the tech sector.” While the exact launch date of the automated vehicles in Dallas remains undisclosed, Lyft has promised to share more about the launch in the coming months, beyond just the planned partnership announcement made the day before Lyft's quarterly earnings.
The move towards autonomous vehicle services is gaining traction across different players in the industry, including Tesla and General Motors’ Cruise robotaxi service. Under Lyft's new program, riders can engage with an autonomous ride directly through the Lyft app, integrating seamlessly into their current service model. Marubeni's involvement in the initiative is significant, as the company already commands a substantial presence in the global fleet ownership market through its numerous subsidiaries and joint ventures.
