A 56-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest outside a deli in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. The incident occurred yesterday at approximately 6:20 p.m. near 717 E. 187th Street, where the man was found by police, laying unconscious and subsequently transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, tragically, he was later pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wound.
Following the shooting, a police standoff unfolded at a home on Prospect Avenue, just around the corner from the deli, PIX11 News has revealed— officers sought to communicate with an individual in connection with the shooting however the person refused to engage or exit the building, leading to a barricaded situation where police finally managed to take someone into custody though their relation to the event is still undetermined.
In the aftermath of the violence, the local community remains on edge, as the pop of gunfire once more punctured the ordinary hum of life in this slice of the Bronx. As quoted by ABC7NY, neighbor Rudy Valesquez expressed a longing for calm, stating, "I hope this year those things get better because there's a lot of killings," and lamenting the state of affairs as "Not good. Not good."
This recent killing marks the second murder in the area for the year 2025, intensifying the unease among residents who are reeling from the abrupt spike in violence in stark contrast to the previous year's singular case as recorded by police, the NYPD is continuing its investigation into the deadly confrontation that culminated in a local resident's life violently cut short, and so far, no description of the suspect has been released neither have further arrests been made.
