Early this morning, a series of events unfolded on I-96 in Livonia that left one man hospitalized with serious injuries. Following a multi-vehicle crash, the man exited his vehicle and was subsequently struck by another car, as reported by WWJ Newsradio. The incident occurred on eastbound I-96 near I-275 at approximately 5:30 a.m.
Despite trying to slow down for traffic, the driver of the car that hit the pedestrian was unable to completely avoid the collision. According to a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, the victim was involved in an initial four-vehicle crash just east of M-14 on I-96. After the initial accident, the driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained at the scene and is reportedly cooperating with Livonia police.
The injury sustained by the man was serious, but he is considered to be in stable condition, as noted by police. While this unfortunate event took a serious toll on him, others involved in the original collision escaped with minor injuries.
The aftermath of the crash saw I-96 and ramps to the freeway close for several hours, creating significant traffic disruptions. ClickOnDetroit mentioned that the injured man was attempting to reach the grassy median when another car, not involved in the crash, tried to swerve and unavoidably hit him. The freeway was eventually reopened around 8:40 a.m., as confirmed by both FOX 2 Detroit and ClickOnDetroit.
