A Michigan man is facing felony charges after authorities say he was caught on camera beating a puppy inside a camper van. The 25-year-old suspect, Corbin Miller of Manistee, was taken into custody on Monday and is now held at the Macomb County Jail, according to CBS News Detroit.
Miller has been charged with one count of animal killing/torture, which carries a four-year felony, and two counts of police officer-assault/resist/obstructing, each a two-year felony. The injured puppy, named Maeby, a 3-month-old German Pointer mix, suffered multiple fractures, including injuries to her skull, pelvic girdle, and femur. Despite the severity of Maeby's situation, Macomb County Animal Control has reported that she was in good spirits and is expected to receive surgery, as stated by FOX 2 Detroit.
The incident took place near a fast-food restaurant on Hall Road, and deputies were alerted after a witness reported the abuse. "I was actually sitting in my car eating my lunch, and I could hear the yelping of pain in a dog," Brandon Dell told WXYZ. Dell, who had just left a job interview and was at the adjacent Taco Bell, observed Miller striking the dog with a "cylindrical item," as per FOX 2 Detroit.
Upon the deputies' attempt to intervene, Miller was uncooperative, refusing to allow access to the puppy or obey law enforcement commands. Eventually, officials retrieved Maeby from the vehicle, and her injuries were promptly addressed. In the statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, authorities have arranged a foster home for Maeby as she continues to recover from surgery. Meanwhile, individuals who wish to support Maeby's recovery can make donations to assist with her and other pets in need.
Macomb County Sheriff officers are using the case to highlight a broader issue with animal abuse laws in Michigan. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the current law classification means many animal abusers do not receive significant sentences. The public has been urged to reach out to the 41A District Court to express their expectations for a just punishment in this case. The probable cause hearing is set for February 18, as mentioned in the initial report by CBS News Detroit.
