In Maricopa, when the weight of hardship presses upon the shoulders of its residents, there's one figure who stands as a beacon of aid without the fanfare of sirens or the severity of blue uniforms. Jim DeVenezia, the Community Support Specialist for the Maricopa Police Department, has etched a role that diverges from the expected paths of law enforcement into a realm where kindness underpins authority. His job entails providing a blend of assistance and empathy that stretches well beyond the conventional job description of a police officer. "Many times, people get surprised, and they say, 'I didn't know that the police department does stuff like this," DeVenezia said, as stated by the City of Maricopa.

DeVenezia's soft touch involves pooling resources for community projects in partnership with the police department. A particularly touching tradition includes the Angel Tree program, where last Christmas, for the second year, the bounty of generosity overflowed with gifts that the community left in the police station's lobby. It's gestures like this that imbue the department with a warmer, more approachable image. Moreover, DeVenezia keeps two cubbies filled with stuffed animals which are given out by officers on calls to provide comfort. "A lady recently shared that when she was eight years old, something traumatic happened to her family, and she still cherishes the stuffed animal given to her by a police officer," DeVenezia said, according to the City of Maricopa.

In his role, DeVenezia also stands as the intermediary between law enforcement and the local homeowners' associations, striving to bridge the sometimes imposing gap that exists between citizens and their civilian protectors. This is a part of Chief Mark Goodman's broader vision for community policing, a framework rooted in the solidification of trust and cooperation. “Community policing is all about building strong, positive relationships between the police and the community," Goodman conveyed. "It means officers work closely with residents to solve problems and improve the quality of life for everyone,” the City of Maricopa noted.
