Mario Kirkwood has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for a fatal shooting and armed robbery in Southaven. The incident, which occurred back in 2023 at the Luxe Apartments, resulted in the death of Keon Kirk Jr., just days after he and Kirkwood graduated from high school. As reported by FOX13 Memphis, Kirkwood pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery charges.
Kirkwood's conviction carries a separate sentence of 40 years for the murder charge and an additional 15 years for the armed robbery. The case against him mounted as evidence, including social media messages where Kirkwood appeared to brag about the crime, became overwhelming. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton described the incident not as an attempted drug deal, but a premeditated robbery-murder, according to an interview by Action News 5.
This legal closure brings attention to the reverberating pain such acts of violence cause within a community and family. Debraca Quinn, the victim's mother, shared in court the profound loss of her son, whom she described as a "kind-hearted, hardworking young man," per the reporting from WREG News Channel 3.
Additional individuals connected with the case include Kirkwood's cousin, Marcus Walker, and an accomplice, Jerry Hawkins Jr., who was charged with lesser crimes involving the concealment of the murder weapon and cleanup of evidence. While Walker, who was a minor at the time of the crime, has been sentenced to probation following juvenile detention, Hawkins received a five-year prison sentence according to Action News 5.
