The Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services made a significant move by appointing Matt West as the new administrator of the Workers’ Compensation Division. The decision, which takes effect immediately, has been anticipated since West's tenure as interim administrator which started in January 2024. His experience in the division spans over 19 years, suggesting a deep understanding of the systems in play for workers' compensation in the state.
Having managed various roles within the agency, West's promotion was announced earlier in a DCBS press release. Before being interim administrator, he played the part of deputy administrator for two years and has held supervisory positions including employment services manager and resolution manager. Experienced since 2003, he's been in the game helping workers get back on the job and climbing the administrative ladder within the WCD.
In a statement obtained by the DCBS, the director of the Department of Consumer and Business Services, Andrew Stolfi, commended West, saying, "From the time he started at WCD helping injured workers return to work, Matt has supported workers and employers in Oregon.” Stolfi added, “Matt’s leadership going forward will continue to support all participants in the workers' compensation system."
West himself, in expressing gratitude for his new role, told the DCBS, "I am honored to be selected to serve as the administrator of the Workers’ Compensation Division." He elaborated on his mission by stating, "This is an incredible opportunity to continue to serve and support both workers and employers in Oregon." His track record, having begun as a benefit consultant, and his involvement on boards related to workers' compensation suggests a commitment that extends beyond desk-bound duties.
Among his other contributions, West's educational foundations lie in a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science and Sociology from Portland State University. His role on the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions' board of directors, alongside his position as the vice president of the Western Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards, sets him up as a figure of considerable influence in the field. He also has a seat on the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences Advisory Board, indicating West's broad engagement with occupational health and safety matters.
