In a move aimed at bolstering the city's retail sector, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Robust Retail Grant Program, designed to support DC-based retail businesses. The Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) will manage the initiative, offering selected businesses a chance to receive funding of up to $10,000. This year's program is accepting applications until March 31, 2025, with 48 businesses set to be chosen through a lottery system. Mayor Bowser underscored the program's benefits, stating, "Supporting DC’s local businesses means more jobs, stronger neighborhoods, and greater opportunities for residents," in a recent press release on the DC government's official website.
Reflecting on the program, Mayor Bowser and the DSLBD are aiming to inspire ambition and promote economic resilience among local entrepreneurs. Since 2019, when the initiative began, it has provided $4 million to almost 500 businesses across all DC wards. DSLBD Director Rosemary Suggs-Evans told the government's official website that "Our goal this year is to provide meaningful assistance that inspires ambition and fosters economic resilience," noting the grant's role in aiding retail establishments to persist and evolve within shifting market landscapes.
With a focus on specific commercial areas, the 2025 Robust Retail initiative includes targeted support for small businesses along the North Capitol Main Street corridor, allocating a total of $90,000 to potentially empower up to nine qualified applicants with individual grants. To be eligible, businesses must operate as for-profit entities with a physical retail presence in DC, be independently owned, and employ fewer than 25 full-time individuals. The necessity of these grants is evident in the variety of operational costs they cover, which includes wages, rent, inventory, and new expenditures related to improving online or delivery services.
As per the same press release, the various uses for the funding acquired from the Robust Retail Grant Program extend beyond the immediate necessities of wages and inventory to the veins of the business, such as insurance, utility expenses, and cleaning supplies. Grant recipients will receive their announcements during DC Small Business Week, taking place from May 5 through May 9, 2025—a celebration indicative of the District's ongoing support for its local businesses.
