In the city of Medford, where temperatures are dropping perilously low, the local government is opening a severe weather shelter to offer refuge for individuals in need. As reported by the City of Medford website, the shelter located at 332 W. 6th Street will be operational from Monday, February 3, through Wednesday, February 5, as part of a severe weather event declaration issued by City Manager Rob Field.
Triggered by forecasts of sub-freezing temperatures, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit with complicating factors such as wind or precipitation, the shelter offers warmth and basic amenities, opening doors from 5:30 pm to 8:30 am. With the capability to house 64 people, it provides food, bedding, and dry storage, making it accessible to all, with no religious affiliation or drug testing required. While the volunteers, coordinated by ACCESS, are crucial to the shelter's operation, stating available staffing will necessitate a minimum of 48 hours notice for effective mobilization.
Those looking to lend a hand in these efforts can reach out to ACCESS for volunteering opportunities by sending an email to [email protected], as stated in the City's announcement. Medford residents can keep themselves informed about the status of severe weather shelters by texting MED4SHELTERS to 888777. In an expression of community solidarity, local organizations who wish to provide shelter are encouraged to contact Deputy Fire Marshal Tanner Farrington at 541-774-2300.
