With temperatures plunging into dangerous territory, Mel Trotter Ministries has escalated its response to what they term "life-threatening cold weather" in West Michigan. The organization, known for aiding the unhoused, has activated a Code Blue to expand its provisions for those in need. Mel Trotter opened its overflow Day Center located at 225 Commerce Ave. SW bolstered the nighttime capacity at its main shelter to accommodate more individuals seeking warmth, WZZM13 reported.
As forecasters predict feel-like temperatures hitting the negatives, the urgency for warm shelter intensifies. The Day Center's opening is part of an effort to prevent hypothermia and frostbite among the city's homeless population. "We're a little further into winter. We all wish it was over," Matthew Grisbowski, Advancement Operations Manager at Mel Trotter, stated, as reported by FOX 17, emphasizing the potentially fatal impact of high winds and extreme cold, "especially with the high winds. It just eats right through a coat, very deadly," Grisbowski said.
Furthermore, outreach teams affiliated with the ministry have increased their presence on the streets, searching for those without shelter and offering assistance. In a coordinated regional response, additional facilities, including all 20 Kent District Libraries, have opened their doors as warming centers. As detailed by WZZM13, the full list of these locations can be found on Mel Trotter's website.
The ministry provides shelter, warm clothing, and supplies, including coats, blankets, and hand warmers, for those in the biting cold. The organization insists that access to shelter during this time is not just a convenience but a requirement for survival. If anyone is in an emergency because of the cold, Mel Trotter reminds the public that calling 911 for immediate help is vital.
