Memphis residents and those in the surrounding areas are being cautioned to stay vigilant as the National Weather Service (NWS) continues its flood advisory for the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers. Seeking higher ground and avoiding flood-prone areas is recommended as these advisories are a response to excessive rainfall causing river levels to surge.
Particularly, NWS Memphis reports that the Mississippi River at Memphis is expected to reach a crest of 28.5 feet by early Monday morning, remaining under the flood stage but still causing noticeable impacts. For Arkansas residents, the advisory details that the Dacus Lake Road under the I-55 Bridge is beginning to flood, expecting that the water will encroach on surrounding levees.
While the advisory remains in effect until Friday morning, residents are urged to take all necessary precautions. "If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternative route," advises the NWS. Furthermore, individuals are urged to exercise caution when walking near riverbanks due to the unpredictable nature of elevated water levels.
The forecast for the upcoming days in Memphis suggests clear skies, with temperatures expected to gradually rise from the sunny 51°F today to a high near 69°F by Wednesday, as stated by NWS Memphis. Despite the calm weather, with a "chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight," on Wednesday night, the community must remain on alert for sudden weather changes that may aggravate the current flood risks.
