Memphis Police are actively investigating a shooting that occurred at TJ Mulligans, a local bar located in Midtown on Madison Avenue. The incident, which unfolded last night, resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries. According to reports from Action News 5, authorities responded to the scene following notifications of the shooting.
Early information revealed by police indicates that the altercation started when one of the victims was verbally harassed by a suspect in the bathroom. "That is when the witness says the suspect pulled out a knife on the victim before dropping it," WREG reported, citing a witness account. The chaos swiftly escalated, moving towards the bar area where the confrontation turned physical, resulting in one of the victims being shot in the buttocks and initially taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition.
Further investigation into the events of that night exposed more layers to the complexity of the incident. "During the scuffle, police say a gun was fired by the unknown suspect," detailed WREG. Surveillance from the premises allegedly showcased the prime suspect leaving the restroom and handing what could have been a firearm to another individual involved in the incident. Following the confrontation, police discovered a pistol and a pocket knife underneath a table at the bar.
The situation has prompted additional scrutiny on the venue, as reports from WREG reveal that this is not the first time police have been summoned to TJ Mulligans for disturbances. Notably, on the previous Thursday, officers had to respond to an incident in the bar's parking lot on Houston Levee around 1 a.m.
The condition of one of the victims, initially reported as non-critical, was later updated to critical due to the sustained injuries. Meanwhile, a person who was detained for questioning was released after police confirmed they were not a suspect in the shooting. With the gunman still at large, Memphis Police urge the public to come forward with any information they might have regarding this event. Anyone with potential leads should contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH, WREG advises.
