Milwaukee Public Schools Names Brenda Cassellius as New SuperintendentSource: Google Street View

Milwaukee Public Schools is welcoming a new superintendent, Brenda Cassellius, formerly at the helm of Boston Public Schools. The decision was announced following a closed-session meeting of the MPS board which resulted in an 8-1 vote in favor of Cassellius, as reported by JSOnline. Board member Darryl Jackson was the sole opposing vote and did not provide specifics on the reasons for his dissent.

The selection process, which included a background check and contract negotiations, chose Cassellius over other contenders such as Joshua Starr, former superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, and Andrae Townsel, superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools in Maryland. The MPS board is hoping to finalize Cassellius's contract by June, "We gave part of our lives to make this happen so we're very excited about it,” expressed Board President Marva Herndon, as mentioned in an interview by TMJ4’s Megan Lee.

In a statement obtained by FOX6, Cassellius shared her enthusiasm for the new role, "I am honored to have been selected to lead the Milwaukee Public Schools, and look forward to working  hand in hand with the dedicated MPS educators, school leaders, and community members." She stressed the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders for the success and thriving of students and their families.

Cassellius will step into the role previously held by Keith Posley, who resigned in June 2024. As the MPS community anticipates the arrival of their new leader, Herndon reassured families and students, saying, “they are in good hands and what I would say to them is buckle up because we're ready to go." This transition comes at a time when MPS is seeking a fresh start, and the board is confident in Cassellius’s ability to guide the district, as noted by TMJ4.
