With summer on the horizon, Minneapolis families can now swiftly dive into planning their kids' warm-weather activities. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has just launched its online showcase of summer youth programs, ready for families to peruse before registration officially kicks off on March 5. Everything from swim lessons and STEAM classes to teen-centric activities and nature programs can soon be booked, according to information from the MPRB's announcement. Keen parents can get a head start on planning by visiting minneapolisparks.org/register, with thousands of programs to consider.
To make these activities more accessible, the MPRB is changing up the game and has introduced a revamped fee structure for their youth programs, starting with the summer sign-up season on March 5. Historically, a mix of scholarships, fee assistance, and complimentary programs was available to help financially strapped families. But now, things will be streamlined into one easier-to-navigate system. As detailed in the MPRB's statement, "All programs will be listed at their actual cost calculated through a new formula that accounts for staff wages, materials and other considerations." This means families can see what a program truly costs to run and then choose a price that aligns with their finances.
There's an important catch: while all programs now have a cost associated, discounts are widely available for the city's youth under 18. That said, non-residents won't be seeing any fee breaks this time around. Depending on the family’s income and size, they can select from discounts of 25%, 50%, 75%, or even 100%. For a full rundown on how the discounts work, families can check out the Discount Fee Guideline Chart linked in the MPRB's announcement. This new financial approach has been crafted to open doors for all children to participate in enriching experiences, without money being a barrier.
The new structure comes as a response to the board's mission to ensure programs are as inclusive as possible. "This new approach ensures all young people have access to enriching recreation and environmental programs regardless of financial barriers," as noted in the MPRB's release. Additionally, it also reflects a more transparent model, allowing families to understand and to directly participate in the actual costs of these programs. With registration opening in a few short weeks, Minneapolis parents have a brief window to budget and plan, ensuring their kids have an educational and fun-filled summer ahead.
