The Modesto Police Department is gearing up to offer a new educational outreach for local youth with the WAKE-UP program slated to begin on April 8. The six-week initiative, aimed at teens aged 12 to 17, will host its sessions at the MPD Headquarters located at 600 10th Street, primarily on Tuesdays between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. An additional session will be conducted on a Saturday, which includes a prison visit, as a part of the program's hands-on learning experience.
Announced via a social media post from the Modesto Police Department, the program sets out to instill critical decision-making skills in participants and promote responsible citizenship. The intention is to provide the youth with better tools to navigate the complexities of society. According to the post, a parent or guardian is also required to attend each session alongside their student, ensuring that family engagement is part of the equation.
Enrollment into the WAKE-UP program is open to youths who are either signed up by their parent or guardian or referred by their school. This approach emphasizes the collaborative nature of the program, pulling together resources from families, educational institutions, and law enforcement to provide a unified support front for the participating teens.
