In a recent crackdown on illicit substances within the city’s smoke shops, the Modesto Police Department has taken significant action over a targeted two-day operation. According to a social media post by the department, the operation took place on Wednesday, January 29, and Thursday, January 30, during which members conducted inspections at a total of 23 businesses within Modesto.
The result of this sweep was the issuance of several citations and the seizure of over 1,500 pounds of flavored tobacco and cannabis products. Furthermore, officials recovered more than 1,000 methamphetamine pipes that were displayed for sale in these establishments. The MPD's efforts highlight its ongoing focus on targeting businesses accused of exploiting local youth and contributing to community decline, key issues addressed in six previous operations.
Describing the impetus behind these operations, MPD’s social media announcement emphasized, "This operation demonstrates MPD’s continued dedication to combatting businesses that market to area youth and contribute to community blight." There’s yet to be a formal statement from the owners of the affected shops or any indication on how these developments will impact smoke shop operations citywide.
