A 19-year-old from Monte Alto, Texas was arrested at the Progreso International Bridge border crossing on charges of sexual assault of a child, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials report. Acting Port Director Jorge Galvan highlighted the role CBP officers play in community safety, stating, "CBP officers play a vital role in keeping our communities safe," and that "This apprehension underlines that commitment" according to a press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
During routine screening on Saturday, February 8, CBP officers flagged Lazaro Salazar for a more in-depth check where they used biometric verification and federal databases to confirm his identity along identity and connect him to an outstanding felony warrant, the specifics of the charges in that warrant were for sexual assault of a child, which had been issued by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, the warrant's execution marks the intersection of vigilance at our borders and the collaborative essence of law enforcement agencies aiming to hold alleged perpetrators accountable.
