In the early hours of February 1st, a patrol deputy from the Moorpark Police Department stopped a vehicle for driving without headlights on Moorpark Avenue. This routine traffic stop led to the arrest of Eduardo Cardona for driving under the influence. However, what seemed like a straightforward DUI arrest unfolded into more serious charges for Cardona and his companions, Christian Mendez and Jose Orozco Sevilla, who were later linked to gang-related graffiti in the area.

During the stop, a deputy noticed a black spray paint can in the vehicle, but at the time, was not aware of the link to recent vandalism cases. The subsequent investigation by Moorpark detectives uncovered four locations marred by fresh graffiti in the vicinity. Armed with a search warrant for the vehicle, authorities found additional evidence tying the trio to the defacement and pointing to their engagement in criminal street gang activities. Cardona and Mendez, both from Simi Valley, aged 25 and 18 respectively were subsequently arrested on charges including Vandalism, Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, and Street Terrorism.

On Wednesday, detectives apprehended Sevilla, also 18 and from Simi Valley, bringing similar charges against him. Searches at Sevilla's residence further cemented the connection to the crimes. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities and vandalism to the Sheriff's Dispatch, with the City of Moorpark Graffiti Hotline providing an additional resource for residents to combat this blight on their neighborhoods.

Detective Jon Nungester, who prepared the report, also pointed out Ventura County Crime Stoppers' offer of a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and criminal complaint against those responsible for such crimes. Community members are encouraged to assist anonymously, should they choose, by calling Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477). The Ventura County Sheriff's Office, continuing its outreach, urges citizens to follow them on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and to subscribe to local law enforcement alerts through Nixle by texting their zip code to 888777.
