The escape of Wayne Pletcher from Muskingum County jail on February 1 has led to a series of arrests involving his close associates. Coordination between friends and family facilitated his exit from the minimum-security detention area, according to details released by the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office. The group now faces various felony charges after being apprehended by local authorities.
Notably, the escapee Pletcher, along with Sara Moore, believed to be his girlfriend, his sister Christina Webb, and several others, were arrested as part of the investigation spearheaded by Detective Jeremy Archer. Designed with malice, planning the escape exposed each accomplice to the justice they initially sought to elude. According to the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office, "Every single person who aided Pletcher after his escape had the opportunity to pick up a phone and report his location to law enforcement. Instead, they chose to commit felonies and now they will face the consequences of their behavior in the Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas."
The defendants range in age and relation to Pletcher, including two 18-year-olds, Eleveea Largent and Pletcher's cousin Leona Bell Dejesus, each charged with obstructing justice and tampering with evidence. The patriarch of the group, James W. Pletcher, is Pletcher's stepfather/uncle, aged 59, facing his own counts for obstructing justice and tampering with evidence in a way that surely was unexpected. Vanessa Cooper, another of Pletcher's ex-girlfriends, will also stand trial for her role.
In a statement highlighting the community's responsibilities, Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz stated, "We urge citizens not to allow themselves to be drawn in to the criminal behavior of their friends and relatives." The security deficiencies of the existing facility were acknowledged and will be addressed with the new jail design planned for Pershing Ave. The individuals, now charged, serve as a stark reminder of the legal perils that come with aiding and abetting criminal acts.
By bringing these individuals to account, Muskingum County Prosecutor Ron Welch echoes the admonishment of future complicity, "If you help someone committing a crime or escaping law enforcement you will be charged and held accountable."
