The City of New Orleans is altering its waste collection routine to accommodate the upcoming Mardi Gras Day celebrations, according to a recent announcement by the Department of Sanitation. With the city bracing for the festivities, certain modifications have been put in place for the collection schedule for residents and businesses at eligible properties.
This year, the regular curbside trash and recycling collection will be suspended on Tuesday, March 4, for those outside of the French Quarter and Downtown Development District (DDD) areas. As the city's streets prepare to welcome parades of revelers and floats, municipal services are adjusting to ensure that the post-celebration cleanup is as smooth as possible. In a statement obtained by the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation, residents and businesses are encouraged to "plan accordingly" for this brief hiatus in service.
To address the gap, the sanitation department has updated the collection schedule. Trash and recycling pickups will shift one day later: Tuesday’s collection will be on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, Thursday’s on Friday, and Friday’s on Saturday for the affected week.
Services in high-density areas like the French Quarter and DDD will not be affected by the Mardi Gras Day holiday and will continue with daily curbside collection. The City thanks residents and businesses for their cooperation and encourages anyone with questions to contact the Department of Sanitation through the 311 line or visit the official website.
