As the fog settles in over New Orleans, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM CST this morning. Residents in southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi are experiencing visibility reduced to one quarter mile, or less, which has been known to lead to treacherous driving conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory warns, Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog, and it spans across a wide array of locations including, but not limited to Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Gulfport. These conditions pose a risk for those hitting the roads early. As the visibility drops, the likelihood of accidents increases, as drivers navigate a gauze of gray that cloaks traffic lights and stop signs, other vehicles, and pedestrians with an impartial blindness, as per the National Weather Service.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution. This is critical advice intended to help prevent traffic mishaps in these low visibility conditions. Local law enforcement may be on high alert to assist with any incidents that may occur due to the dense fog.
The fog is expected to lift by midmorning, leading to a mostly sunny day, with temperatures climbing near 77 degrees. Looking ahead, the weather for New Orleans and surrounding areas over the next few days will be a mix of sun and clouds with possible showers, as Monday carries a 20 percent chance of rain. Southeast winds around 5 mph, becoming calm by evening, are also on the forecast. Showers are more likely towards the mid-week point, with a 50 percent chance on Tuesday and a 70 percent chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm on Wednesday night, as reported by the National Weather Service.
