New York Historical Honors Flaco, NYC's Beloved Escapee Owl, with "The Year of Flaco" ExhibitSource: Google Street View

The New York Historical has officially unveiled an exhibit in memory of Flaco, New York City's famed fugitive owl, entitled "The Year of Flaco." This anticipated display opened its doors today and will be available for visitors through July 6, showcasing photos and videos that illustrate Flaco's unconventional journey across the city after his notable escape from the Central Park Zoo, as CBS News reported.

Fans of the bird may recall, captured the imaginations of many when he took flight into the urban wilderness in February 2023. After the netting to his enclosure was compromised by vandals, Flaco quickly adapted to his newfound freedom. Flaco, continuing to draw attention throughout his time in the wild, even made guest appearances on local residents' windowsills, as per the documentation included in the exhibit.

A somber element of the exhibit reflects on Flaco's untimely death in February 2024, when he tragically collided with a Manhattan building. To honor the celebrated raptor, personal memorabilia, such as letters and drawings from a memorial created beneath Flaco's chosen tree, will also be displayed, highlighting the powerful connection he forged with New Yorkers. ABC 7 New York shared the poignant story of a letter left by a woman named Olivia, stating, "Seeing you peacefully rest in your tree turned the worst days around and when I applied to law school, I thought of you every time I thought I would fail."

The exhibit not only observes Flaco's life but also highlights the broader issue of avian welfare in urban settings. The owl's death, caused by consuming rats and pigeons infected with poison, sparked a debate about bird safety in the city. This conversation has led to active conservation efforts, with legislation now in the works to protect birds in the urban landscape. "He showed us the best of what New York can be," said Rebecca Klassen, curator of the New-York Historical Society, to ABC 7 New York, referring to the emblem of hope that Flaco became for many city inhabitants.

For those wanting to extend their support or remember Flaco, a range of official merchandise, including T-shirts, books, tote bags, and more, is available for purchase. Admission prices are set at $24 for adults and $6 for kids aged five to 13. The New York Historical, located at 170 Central Park West and 77th Street on the Upper West Side, invites guests to visit from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to experience this tribute to a beloved New York icon.
