In a move to forge a leader within the optical networking sector, Nokia has announced the completion of its acquisition of Infinera Corporation, a company headquartered in San Jose. The addition of Infinera to Nokia's portfolio is expected to provide the Finnish telecom giant with significant leverage in the rapidly growing data center market, an area increasingly pressured by the demands of AI and cloud services. According to a LinkedIn post from Infinera, the merger aims to create an "innovation powerhouse" in optical networks.
Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia, expressed enthusiasm for the recent integration of Infinera, stating, "This transaction will significantly improve our scale and profitability in optical networks, and allows us to speed up the pace of innovation to meet the requirements of the AI era." In a statement obtained by Nokia, Lundmark also emphasized that the Infinera acquisition will amplify Nokia's growth strategy in data centers and bolster the company's presence in North America and among webscale customers. The closure of this deal has been welcomed, especially by customers who anticipate strengthened offerings in networking technologies.
The Infinera team is set to integrate into Nokia's Optical Networks business unit, led by James Watt, its Vice President and General Manager. Former Infinera CEO David Heard will be NI Chief Strategic Growth Officer within Nokia’s Network Infrastructure business group. In this position, he will oversee the implementation of the business group’s growth plans. "His extensive experience in technology and business strategy implementation will play a leading role in helping our business group seize opportunities in the market and achieve our ambitions across all our markets and business areas," Federico Guillén, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia, told Nokia in an interview, regarding Heard's appointment.
By bringing together the strengths of both companies, this acquisition builds a combined customer base of more than 1,000 globally. The combined solutions of the now-larger entity are expected to empower some of the largest operators worldwide along with key sectors such as enterprise, utilities, government, and research & education. Nokia's comprehensive portfolio in Network Infrastructure is geared to uphold mission-critical standards, aligning closely with the reliability, security, and sustainability needs of today's data center infrastructure. Moreover, Nokia has reconfirmed its synergy target of over EUR 200 million, as initially projected on June 28, 2024, hinting at the positive financial impact that Infinera’s assimilation is projected to have by 2027, as noted in a release seen at Nokia's official news section.
