New Yorkers are gearing up to dial within a new set of digits, as the "465" area code is set to become part of the city's numerical lexicon in 2026. Plans for this addition, which will serve the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan, were announced by the New York State Public Service Commission last Thursday. This change is poised to introduce new combinations for residential, business, and wireless customers within the current 347/718/917/929 region, but will not affect existing numbers, as confirmed by reports from ABC7NY.

The Public Service Commission notes that all current numbers under the existing codes must be assigned before the new 465 code is activated. The forecasted timeline suggests that by as early as October 2026, newcomers, and tech devices might be tagged with this fresh marker. This move, according to Commission Chair Rory M. Christian, seeks to accommodate "increased telephone usage" and "ensure that there are enough phone numbers available for New Yorkers," as CBS News reported. Notably not long ago, Long Island also embraced a shift in digits, transitioning from 516 to the 363 area code.

Christian reiterated the necessity of the new code in a statement, highlighting that "with increased telephone usage, we must accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers." The addition of the "465" code is projected to supply telephone numbers for approximately 11 years, ensuring that the metropolis remains connected and operational in the face of burgeoning communication needs, according to CBS News. The process of implementing an overlay area is not new to the Empire State, with officials pointing to past years where New York, along with other parts of the U.S., consistently adopted this method to expand their numeric inventories.
