A man wearing a black ski mask crept up behind a 39-year-old victim in front of 318 West 231st Street just before 1:20 a.m. last Monday and stole roughly $100,000 worth of jewelry, according to police. The suspect displayed an unknown object and demanded the victim's property before fleeing into the night, leaving investigators searching for a man who has not been identified or caught.
The robbery happened on West 231st Street, as reported by News 12 New York. The outlet reports the suspect approached the victim from behind and made off with multiple pieces of jewelry, including rings, bracelets, earrings, and a pendant, according to police sources. He was last seen wearing a multicolored jacket and dark-colored pants in addition to the ski mask.
A High-Traffic Corner Steps From the Subway
The location sits along West 231st Street within the Kingsbridge Business Improvement District; Moovit is cited in connection with the location. The BID itself is an L-shaped commercial zone established in 2001 encompassing nearly 200 storefronts stretching from Corlear Avenue to Bailey Avenue along West 231st Street, per Norwood News. The robbery occurred on a commercial strip in the neighborhood.
The crime scene falls within the NYPD's 50th Precinct, which includes Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, and Riverdale and is commanded by Captain Amadeo Oktrova. The precinct is described as reporting the fewest major crimes in the borough, according to Building Security Services.
