A crime spree in Northwest Harris County culminated in an officer-involved shooting, authorities said. According to a report by Click2Houston, the incident began when a stolen vehicle was reported on Richmond Avenue and Jeanetta Road at around 3 a.m. today. The suspect later robbed a convenience store at gunpoint on Westerland Drive and Westheimer Road. Following the robbery, officers located the stolen vehicle and pursued it to the Copperfield Subdivision, where the shootout ensued.
Assistant Chief James Skelton of the Houston Police Department described the sequence of events, stating, "As the officers converged, he exited the stolen vehicle, ran through the courtyard and immediately started to fire at the officers." Skelton claimed no officers were injured, and the suspect was hospitalized in unknown condition, as per Click2Houston. The police department later confirmed that the involved officers would be placed on paid administrative leave. "We're just glad and thankful we were able to basically stop that act and get him off our streets," Skelton expressed gratitude for the intervention.
Separately, a KHOU report provided additional detail about the suspect's crime spree. Prior to the shooting, the suspect had allegedly committed a carjacking, robbing three women of their vehicle. Subsequently, only 12 minutes passed before the individual robbed a nearby convenience store. The officers who engaged the suspect ranged in experience from six months to three years, and the Houston Police Department has assured that body-worn camera video is to be released within 30 days.
This incident marks the second consecutive day of gunfire exchanges between Houston officers and suspects. In the previous case, two teenagers accused of trespassing at a southeast Houston apartment complex were involved in a shootout with law enforcement. One teen was injured by gunfire, while the other was injured by broken glass during the exchange. "Within the past two days, we’ve had incidents when officers have been fired on by suspects who are doing evil," Assistant Chief Skelton told KHOU, reaffirming the department's commitment to public safety.
The investigations into these shootings are being conducted by both the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Houston Police Department's internal affairs division.
