A tragic incident unfolded late Monday night in a Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood when a homeowner fatally shot a man suspected of trying to break into his home. The situation escalated shortly before 11 p.m. on the 1000 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway near Cedarhurst, where the homeowners, a couple in their 60s, noticed someone tampering with their front door through their Ring camera, as 6ABC reported.
Upon confrontation, the intruder, a 64-year-old man, forced his way into the house by breaking through the front doors. In response, the homeowner discharged one gunshot. "The homeowner fired one shot, striking the 64-year-old who has just broken into the house and he collapsed right inside of the enclosed front porch," Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6ABC.
The suspect, believed to be unhoused, was taken to a hospital where he later died from a gunshot wound to his torso. Philadelphia police arrived at the scene to find "fresh damage" to a wooden door and a Ring camera that had been pulled from the wall lying on the ground in front of the residence. It has been confirmed by authorities that the homeowners are cooperating with the investigation, and they have stated they did not recognize the suspect. To date, no charges have been filed against the homeowners, according to officials cited by NBC Philadelphia.
