Efforts to renovate a Phoenix VFW post have been completed, providing shelter and support for veterans. The VFW Post 720's three-bedroom casita has undergone a two-year process of fundraising and renovations. According to ABC15, the project addressed structural issues such as leaking windows and malfunctioning AC units, resulting in a refurbished space for veterans.
Confronted with a casita showing the effects of age, volunteers and members from Post 720 began an extensive renovation effort. "It showed its age. It was worn down," Patrick Romero, a Navy veteran and commander of VFW Post 720, told 12News in an interview. With a broken air conditioning system and peeling stucco, the casita required more than temporary repairs. A coordinated effort from the community has led to its renovation, including a new kitchen, bathroom, and paint job.
The renovated building is designed to offer temporary housing for veterans awaiting VA decisions or pension checks. It serves as part of the VFW’s ongoing support for its members. "Our motto is, ‘Nobody does more for the veteran than the V.F.W.,'" Romero expressed the sentiment in a statement obtained by 12News.
Joan Rowton, a member of the Post's Auxiliary, has a personal connection to the space. The casita was used by her brother, a nearly 30-year Marine who dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder and sought assistance from the Veterans Administration, offering him a place to stay. "My brother enjoyed it because he had a family here," Rowton shared her experience with 12News. This highlights the broader mission of the VFW Post to create a supportive, familial environment for veterans.
The newly completed shelter provides a step toward stability for those who have served the nation. As the project concludes with final touches, the Post is continuing to seek donations to furnish the casita.
