Last weekend, Pierce County deputies clamped down on a group of street racers who were stirring up trouble at Park Ave S and 108th St S. According to a Pierce County Sheriff's Department blog post, frustrated residents and drivers reported the racers as they engaged in dangerous driving antics like doing donuts and commandeering the intersection. The deputies' arrival sent cars and onlookers scattering in every direction.
In the chaos, the deputies observed four individuals, frantically attempting to evade justice, diving into a vehicle. Quickly acting, they deployed stop sticks to halt the would-be escapees. In a misjudged attempt to dodge the stop sticks, the suspects slammed their vehicle into an uninvolved citizen's car, nevertheless plowing over the stop sticks which deflated their tires. They didn't get far, halting just a few blocks down the road where deputies swooped in for a second contact.
The culprits, four males — two of them aged 18 and the other two only 15 — were taken into custody. Their car, turned evidence repository, yielded cameras and video recorders, and their phones had recorded their illicit activities, now serving as evidence against them. Everything was seized, and their vehicle was impounded, facing a 72-hour hold.
The explicit message to street racers was crystal clear in the department's post: "We will shut you down, arrest you, take your vehicle, take your phones and cameras and book you for an extended vacation in the Pierce County Jail." The officers, praised for their swift action, seem to have sent a sobering warning to anyone considering similar exploits. Running, the deputies did an excellent job was the sentiment echoed throughout the community.
