Green thumbs, mark your calendars because Plymouth's annual foliage fest is just around the corner. The City of Plymouth is rolling out its annual tree and shrub sale starting Saturday, March 1 exclusively for Plymouth residents, with non-residents gaining their chance to dig in starting Saturday, March 8. The sale punches its last time card on Wednesday, April 30, or until the nurseries bare no more, whichever first.
A variety of greenery is on offer, including eight types of shade trees, two evergreens, seven shrubs, and a handful of fruit plants. According to an announcement on the city's official website, the city has curated this selection to out-muscle pests, diseases, and to hold the front line against invasive species. These leafy newcomers are also champions for local pollinators and wildlife, so purchasers can pat themselves on the back for giving Mother Nature a leg up.
For the logistical green-fingered out there, most trees will stand 5-8 feet tall sans soil at the time of exchange. Evergreens, however, will stay potted and a more diminutive 1-3 feet, while the shrubs match evergreens in height but ditch the pot for the bare-root style. Bare-root plants boast a lighter price tag, easier transport, and promise a more flourishing root system than the more traditional balled and burlapped alternative.
Pickup dates are Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 at the Plymouth Maintenance Facility, poised at 14900 23rd Ave. N. Buyers won't need to twiddle their thumbs upon arrival; they'll be assigned a pickup date and time beforehand, sent via an exclusive email. And, to sweeten the deal, customers can snare a complimentary bag of compost, the fruit of the city's yard waste composting efforts, to tuck their new flora in nicely at their forever home.
One heads up: there's no warranty attached to these botanical babies, so it's a plant at your own risk affair. Quantities aren't infinite, either. So if you want to turn that green thumb into a green arm, plumbers, quickly navigate to the city's tree sale page to eye the options and stake your claim.
