A chaotic scene unfolded on Interstate 77 in Iredell County as Jankly Omar Sarmiento-Korea. A 32-year-old previously deported man, was arrested following multiple attempted carjackings and a confrontation with law enforcement last Sunday, as WBTV reports.
Patrol Sergeant N. Hodges of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office witnessed Sarmiento-Korea running in the highway's northbound lanes, acting erratically and trying to stop vehicles near Mile Marker 63, with Sergeant Hodges intervening due to concerns for public safety, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said.
The sergeant, observing the suspect's attempts at pulling open car doors, issued multiple verbal commands for him to stop but Sarmiento-Korea fled causing Hodges to give chase, at which point Sarmiento-Korea turned towards him with a weapon in hand Sergeant Hodges drew his service weapon and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, which Sarmiento-Korea complied with but then he continued to flee as stated in the official Iredell County Sheriff Facebook page.
Several citizens assisted in the subsequent apprehension and restraint of Sarmiento-Korea who was then transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital for evaluation before facing formal charges; these included Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, Felony Assault on a Government Official Causing Physical Injury, and other related felony and misdemeanor charges, with a $125,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Watkins, according to WBTV.
After Sarmiento-Korea was taken into custody, Iredell County Detention staff contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) upon discovering that he had been previously deported, ICE then placed a detainer on him which potentially paves the way for further immigration-related proceedings, this was sourced from information provided by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
