Yolo County has seen a fresh appointment in its ranks, with the promotion of Rachelle Gayton as the new Chief Probation Officer. Previously the Probation Division Manager, Gayton also served as the Interim Chief Probation Officer after Dan Fruchtenicht stepped down in January, as confirmed by Yolo County Interim Administrator Dirk Brazil.
The Yolo County Board of Supervisors heralds Gayton's leap into the role with optimism. Board Chair Mary Vixie Sandy, lauded the appointment, "On behalf of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, I am pleased to congratulate Rachelle Gayton on her appointment as Chief Probation Officer,” according to a statement from the county. “With her extensive experience, and proven leadership within the department, Rachelle is exceptionally well-suited to lead our probation team. We look forward to her leadership and the positive impact she will undoubtedly continue to make in Yolo County."
Rachelle Gayton's tenure in public service spans over two decades, initiating with her role as a Detention Officer at the Yolo County Juvenile Detention Facility in 2006. Her progression has been steady and purposeful: from a Deputy Probation Officer in 2008, a Supervising Probation Officer in 2015, to Probation Division Manager by 2018. Gayton’s track record seems to mirror dedication and leadership, echoed by her peers and the wider Yolo County community.
The new Chief Probation Officer herself acknowledges the weight and honor of the position. “I am deeply grateful for the trust and confidence that have been placed in me to take on this important work,” Gayton communicated in a statement. "As I step into this new role, I look forward to continuing our collective efforts to enhance the effectiveness of our probation programs and services. Working alongside such a dedicated and talented team has always been a privilege, and I am excited for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to make a positive impact on the individuals and communities we serve.”
Gayton's responsibilities as Chief Probation Officer are far-reaching, encompassing the administration of department operations, and oversight of probation and detention services. This includes budgeting and fiscal operations, strategic planning, human resources, facilities, information technology, and clerical services. With a strong emphasis on rehabilitation programs that align with public safety, Gayton's leadership is poised to usher in a continued era of effective probation service for Yolo County.
