As Black History Month unfolds, Ramsey County is deep in commemorations, with this year's focus being "African Americans and the Labor." The theme is a nod to the diverse array of work, both paid and unpaid, that has shaped the lives of Black Americans throughout history. A variety of events, including speaker panels and career fairs, are scheduled to celebrate the contributions of African Americans and to support the ongoing journey toward an inclusive workforce.
In collaboration with the City of Saint Paul, the virtual "Speaker Panel: African American Labor Pioneers," set for February 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m., is among the highlighted events. Featuring William P. Jones, Jean Ann Durades, Frank White, and Louise Sundin, the panel addresses the history and influence of Black labor. According to Ramsey County's official announcement, discussions will cover the critical role played in the national economy, and contributions to the ongoing fight for workplace equality.
An event geared towards economic growth within the Black community, the "Black Business Expo & Financial Empowerment Lunch & Learn," will occur on February 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to network with local entrepreneurs, business professionals, and community organizations. Michael Franks from Advisory Pro Financial LLC will be hosting a lunch and learn segment focusing on financial empowerment strategies.
Later the same day, from 2-6 p.m., the "Empowering Progress Career Fair" seeks to provide opportunities and resources for job seekers of various career stages. The fair promises free professional headshots, entertainment, and local food alongside critical aspects such as financial counseling and paid youth internships. "Workforce Innovation Youth Discussion," set to take place from 5-6 p.m., invites younger constituents, aged 14 to 18, to engage in dialogue around education access, career readiness, and entrepreneurship in the workforce, details Ramsey County's website.
