Rapper A$AP Rocky, legally known as Rakim Mayers, was found not guilty on two counts of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm after a Los Angeles jury deliberated for about three hours. The key to the case was whether the gun in question was a real weapon or, as the defense insisted, a prop gun that only fired blanks. According to KCAL News, Rocky faced up to 24 years in prison if convicted.
The verdict came as a relief to Rocky, who immediately after the decision was read, ran to embrace his longtime partner, pop icon Rihanna, in the courtroom. This high-profile trial featured emotional moments, such as Rihanna attending with their children, and an attorney for Rocky claiming his client was carrying the prop gun as a security measure during a music video shoot. The drama of the courtroom unfolded with Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli, testifying that he was left with bullet-graze wounds from an altercation involving Rocky in Hollywood back in 2021. However, Rocky's defense claimed Ephron attempted to extort the rapper and fabricated evidence, as per NBC Los Angeles.
Joe Tacopina, Rocky's defense attorney, referred to Ephron as a "pathological liar" during the trial and argued that several police officers had thoroughly searched the scene before Ephron returned, not finding any shell casings. "We said from day one, he was innocent," Tacopina told reporters after the verdict. Despite the verdict, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed his office’s unwavering commitment to holding individuals accountable, regardless of fame or status. "While today’s verdict is not the outcome we sought, we respect the jury’s decision and the integrity of our justice system," Hochman said in a statement obtained by KTLA.
