Two brothers have been sentenced for their involvement in a tragic incident that resulted in the death of Kiarra George. Milton Collins, who played a more direct role in the murder, will spend 40 years to life behind bars. His brother, Deandre Collins, received a sentence of 16 months for criminal threats and vandalism. This decision was handed down last Friday, by the Honorable Judge Steve White, as reported by the Sacramento District Attorney's Office.
A jury had previously convicted Milton Collins on September 3, 2024, of second-degree murder. The conviction included the finding that he "personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing death." In an unfolding of aggression and violence that led to this heart-wrenching conclusion, Deandre Collins had gone to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on August 22, 2021, with a gun. According to details released by the Sacramento District Attorney's Office, Deandre and Kiarra George got into an argument at the party, after which she expelled him from her home. However, things escalated when Deandre later returned and damaged her property.
During the ensuing altercation, when Deandre attempted to confront George, his weapon tumbled from his waistband down the apartment complex stairs. Milton Collins, having been summoned to the scene by his brother, picked up the gun and fired the fatal shot. "During the fight, the gun fell out of Deandre's waistband and fell down the apartment complex stairs," read a statement from the Sacramento District Attorney's Office, describing the moments leading up to the shooting.
The sentences reflect the differing degrees of culpability between the two brothers in the slaying of George. While Milton Collins faces an extensive period in prison, Deandre's role appeared to be less directly involved in the fatal outcome, despite his threatening behavior and vandalism constituting criminal activity. The ruling, as it has been presented, serves as a somber reminder of the lives intertwined and forever altered by the pattern of violence spiraled out of control on that fateful day in August 2021, as per the Sacramento District Attorney's Office.
