In what was a remarkable turnaround in Saturday night's NBA game, the Sacramento Kings clawed back from a 20-point deficit to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans, 123-118. According to AP News, Domantas Sabonis led the charge with 27 points and 16 rebounds, marking his 46th double-double, the most in the league this season. The victory extended the Pelicans' losing streak to eight games.
The game's turnaround seemed unlikely early on, falling behind so drastically at 9-29 within the first nine minutes. However, Jake LaRavia's debut for the Kings sparked a change in momentum, making a series of plays that included steals, blocks, and dunks. Sabonis picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter, and yet the Kings managed to close that period on a 22-9 run.
Newcomer Zach LaVine, who was recently acquired from the Chicago Bulls, contributed 22 points in what was labeled his best performance for Sacramento so far. As reported by Sports Illustrated, Keegan Murray also added 19 points and eight rebounds to the mix. On the other side, Zion Williamson dominated with a season-high 40 points, and CJ McCollum followed up with 31, but their efforts weren't enough to stave off the Kings' surge.
Looking at the bench, Sacramento received a boost from its reserves, with significant contributions from not just LaRavia, but also Keon Ellis, Jonas Valančiūnas, and Trey Lyles. Malik Monk was subbed out in favor of keeping Ellis in the game for the last crucial minutes, demonstrating coach Doug Christie's flexible strategy and focus on defense and teamwork. Trey Murphy III scored 20 points for the Pelicans, but did so on 38.9% shooting from the field, highlighting the inconsistency plaguing the rest of the team.
The Pelicans aim to snap their losing streak against Oklahoma City, while the Kings look to keep their momentum going in an away game against Dallas.
