In a recent law enforcement push dubbed Operation Consequences, authorities in San Bernardino County enacted a one-week operation aimed at suppressing crime across various locations in the region. According to a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, the operation took place from February 17 to February 23, 2025, with multiple agencies involved, including the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, Specialized Enforcement Division, and local police departments.

Focused efforts were particularly seen in the High Desert on February 21, where nine search warrants were executed. In an initiative, which included assistance from the California Highway Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, a total of 42 firearms were seized; included among them were 12 ghost guns. As a result of this operation, “investigators contacted gang members and persons prohibited from possessing firearms,” leading to 46 felony arrests and 53 misdemeanor arrests, and illegal narcotics were also recovered.

The impetus behind this extensive operation can be traced to the passing of Proposition 36, titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act,” by California voters on November 5, 2024. This legislation, effective since December 18, 2024, amends previous laws associated with Proposition 47, which were implicated in the rise of homelessness, drug addiction, and theft. With the updated codes established by Proposition 36, deputies now have the authority to levy enhanced sentences and prevent certain offenders from being released on citation before their court appearances, applying to six of the arrests made during the operation.

Mobilizing financial resources to support this suppression effort, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorized funds to enhance quality-of-life issues through increased law enforcement services. Operating over the coming months, “Operation Consequences will take place over the next several months to curb violent crime, disrupt and dismantle targeted criminal street gangs, and locate and arrest criminals who are illegally possessing, manufacturing, and trafficking firearms,” as outlined in the statement by the Sheriff-Coroner Department. This sustained campaign signals a concerted response to the ongoing challenges of criminal activities in the county.

The Sheriff's Department also mentioned that “Operation Consequences will focus on conducting targeted crime suppression operations and parole and probation checks in the High Desert and the Sheriff’s jurisdiction surrounding the city of San Bernardino.” Inquiries on the operation can be directed to the Gangs/Narcotics Division at phone number (909) 387-3700, with case numbers ranging from 662500219 to 652200271, as per their report.
